Westinghouse Time Capsules

Today I was reading in a book called “ Were the Gods Cosmonauts?” by Erich von Däniken.

I won’t discribe the contents of the book, however the it goes beyond just “interesting”… I really wished to share with you a certain paragraph.

Somewhere around page 95 he mentions time capsules we have buried somewhere in New-York, and of-course I had to find out what this was all about!

Quickly I found the Wikipedia page describing in full detail what the Westington Time capsules are all about; In 1938 and 1965th’s New-York World fairs, 2 Time capsules were built, filled with some of the most important human discoveries, books (on microfilm) and buried to be opened in 6939.

Makes you wonder if humans, let alone civilisations, will actually exist by the year 6939  to discover our 20th century inheritance.

I can’t help but sharing the strange message Albert Einstein himself shared in the time capsule. I read it in both awe and fear. Alas this man is so right:

Our time is rich in inventive minds, the inventions of which could facilitate our lives considerably. We are crossing the seas by power and utilise power also in order to relieve humanity from all tiring muscular work. We have learned to fly and we are able to send messages and news without any difficulty over the entire world through electric waves. However, the production and distribution of commodities is entirely unorganised so that everybody must live in fear of being eliminated from the economic cycle, in this way suffering for the want of everything. Further more, people living in different countries kill each other at irregular time intervals, so that also for this reason any one who thinks about the future must live in fear and terror. This is due to the fact that the intelligence and character of the masses are incomparably lower than the intelligence and character of the few who produce some thing valuable for the community. I trust that posterity will read these statements with a feeling of proud and justified superiority.

Maybe we should create a new one… In stead of microfilm we can now store terabytes of data, digital video-footage in high-definition of the entire world cities, nature,… Computer and microchip technology, nano-technology, robotics, …
